Salzburg
Visiting Salzburg and seeing the important  highlights of the town within one day is no  problem at all, even when starting from  Vienna. Today's baroque cathedral was built in1628,  but the earliest church in this place dated  already from the 8th century. Mirabell Palace was a gift by Prince-  Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau to his mistress. They even had 15 children together. The Getreidegasse is Salzburg's most famous and most exclusive shopping lane. It is also  home to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's  birthplace. Of course, Mozart pops up  everywhere one goes in this town: museums,  statues - and the original sweet, delicious  Mozartkugel. The fortress Hohensalzburg was erected in  the 11th century on the town's hill. The view of this ensemble is the well-known picture  postcard motif of Salzburg.
